"I don't understand how a woman can leave the house without fixing herself up a little - if only out of politeness. And then, you never know, maybe that's the day she has a date with destiny. And it's best to be as pretty as possible for destiny."
This Coco Chanel quote is one of my favorites. It caused mixed feelings when I posted in on facebook some time ago. Agree with it or don't. I would love to live in a world where this is not the case but the reality is books are most often judged by the cover.
Coco Chanel was raised in an orphanage which is where she learned to sew. Her first shop was financed by her lover but it was her talent that created the brand. Her talent. She wasn't stunningly beautiful, she was average - ok, maybe she was a little above average - but Chanel was definitely two things, classy and fabulous. Her impeccable style and presence made her look more beautiful than she really was.
This is the lesson we Average Maria's should learn. It doesn’t matter if you don't have model looks or a huge bank account, you can look classy and fabulous within your means. After all, isn't that why we have "off racks"? Work what you have ladies. If you have great hair do it justice with a little silkening serum and blow dry. If you have a great smile make sure you keep your teeth white and put on a little gloss.
One day I will own something Chanel. A quilted purse, a pair of two-toned pumps or a trademark Chanel suit, but in the meantime, I’ll save my money and channel Coco when I feel less than fabulous.
